👃 Smell
Smell is powerful — it’s directly connected to the brain’s limbic system, which controls memory and emotion.
For some children, even the smell of cooked vegetables or a strong cheese can feel threatening. They might gag or leave the room before the plate hits the table. This is especially common in children with heightened olfactory sensitivity, often seen in sensory processing challenges and autism.

Refusing to come to the table when certain foods are served
Gagging before tasting anything
Preferring cold foods (less smell than warm foods)
👅 Taste
Taste is complex — it’s not just sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. It also involves texture, temperature, and even aftertaste.
Children who are hypersensitive to taste may only tolerate bland, predictable flavors. Others might crave strong flavors (like sour or spicy) if they’re under-responsive and need more input.

How to Build Sensory Tolerance at Mealtimes
When your child’s nervous system treats new food as a threat, the solution isn’t to force, trick, or pressure them into trying it. That often backfires — reinforcing fear, reducing trust, and making mealtimes more stressful for everyone.
Instead, the goal is to build sensory tolerance slowly, by helping your child feel safe, curious, and in control.
Here’s how you can do that — using strategies grounded in occupational therapy and sensory integration research.
1. Use the ‘Look-Touch-Lick’ Ladder
Children need to experience a food in multiple ways before they feel ready to eat it — and that process starts long before the food reaches their mouth.
In occupational therapy, we use a concept called a sensory hierarchy or food exposure ladder. It involves gradually increasing a child’s comfort level with a food — starting from a distance and slowly moving closer, over time.
Example ladder:
👀 Look at it (on someone else’s plate, or across the table)
👉 Touch it (with a fork, then with fingers)
👃 Smell it
👅 Lick it (without needing to bite or chew)
👄 Bite and spit (yes, this counts!)
✅ Chew and swallow

3. Create a low-pressure mealtime environment
Pressure — even subtle pressure — increases anxiety and sensory sensitivity.
Avoid:
Saying “just one bite”
Bargaining (“If you try this, you get dessert”)
Guilt (“I worked hard on this and you won’t even taste it?”)
Instead, offer the food neutrally, without expectation, and focus on connection.
You might say:
“This food is here if you’re curious.”
“You don’t have to eat it. Want to help serve it instead?”
“We’re all learning about new foods together.”

Children learn by watching. If you try new foods with curiosity, they’re more likely to follow suit when they’re ready.

“Hmm, this has a funny texture. I’m not sure if I like it — let me try again.”
“This smells different than I expected. What do you think it smells like?”

Extreme food selectivity (eating fewer than 10–15 foods, especially if foods are being dropped over time)

Tantrums or anxiety at the mention of food or mealtimes
Refusing entire food groups (e.g. no fruits or vegetables at all)
Weight loss or failure to gain weight
Prolonged mealtimes (over 30–45 minutes) with little food eaten
Ongoing sensory sensitivities that make food exploration difficult
In these cases, working with a pediatric feeding therapist, often an occupational therapist (OT) or speech-language therapist (SLP) trained in feeding and sensory integration, can be life-changing.
They’ll assess:
Your child’s oral-motor skills (chewing, swallowing, coordination)
Their sensory processing profile
Behavioral and emotional responses to food
Family routines, feeding environment, and caregiver strategies
Together, you’ll create a plan that supports both your child’s sensory system and their relationship with food — not just their intake.
